We Were Just Monkeys: A Poem

*The poem presented below is a preserved work from a creative writing course

We were just monkeys

Emanated from the pure means of survival of a species

No strings attached.

Primates, frolicking in a blithe comedy

Scavaging untamed fields for wild berries

Traversing a stream

Wild and untamed

Simple.

But now,

We are artificial

A contrivance

Beguiled with the unattainable

“Where are you applying Early Decision?”

“What is your alma mater?”

“Did you pass the BAR exam?”

Acts of sheer folly

Abstaining from the comfort of simply not knowing
